It is nice to receive a pleasant surprise when ordering something, especially over the Internet where you don't have the opportunity to see what you are getting. But pleasantly surprised I was, after ordering CableChick's HDMI Splitter.
The HDMI Splitter at $54.95 seemed like it was too good to be true. My other alternatives were HDMI Splitter powered boxes at over $300, and I had heard of problems with similar products to what I saw on Cable Chick. But Cable Chick's Frequently Asked Questions seemed to reinforce that this product did what it said, so I thought I would give it a try.
I was also concerned because I needed the splitter to take a HDMI video signal from my Home Theatre PC to both my Samsung LCD TV and Panasonic Projector. Being a projector, the HDMI cable to it was already 10m, and problems can begin to occur at that length, so previously I thought I would have needed to buy an expensive powered splitter.
But pleasantly surprised I was. After plugging the splitter in, connecting to both TV and Projector, and firing everything up, a perfect clear video signal on both displays.
The HDMI splitter is simple in appearance. A single male HDMI fly lead (about 30cm) is mounted to a small black plastic cube moulding with 2 female HDMI receptacles. The male fly lead connects to your source (in my case a home theatre pc) and you cable the 2 outlets to your displays (LCD TV and projector)
And not only was I delighted by the product, the service was great too. After ordering the splitter, I realised I needed a HDMI cable as well, so I rang and received quick and helpful service confirming exactly which cable I referred to - these guys know cables! The splitter and cable arrived next day - quick! I soon realised I needed a HDMI F-F coupler and another HDMI cable as well (I should have known this as Cable Chick's description of the splitter was quite clear). With my previous order, Cable Chick had generously included a $5 voucher off my next order, so back to the computer. I quickly found what I needed, completed the order (with discount code) and done! Again, parcel arrived next day, and I was able to happily try out the splitter. Great to know there are companies who have what you need in stock, and back that up with quick delivery.
In case it helps, here's my setup.
The home theatre PC has a DVI-D output, for which I had a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Cable Chick supplied me with a Female-Female HDMI coupler (to mate the DVI-HDMI cable to the splitter - if you had a straight HDMI source the splitter could plug directly into that), the HDMI splitter, and 2x 1m HDMI 1.3a cables. One 1m cable goes to the TV, the other goes to a HDMI wall plate (existing) with a 10m HDMI cable run to the projector. The home theatre PC provides a 720p signal to the Panasonic PT-AX100E (720p native) projector. Note: I am not carrying audio over HDMI, and I don't think the home theatre PC is enabling HDCP. If your application uses audio or HDCP, your results may differ to mine.
